Club History
The Garden Club of the Middle Peninsula had its beginnings in Tappahannock, Virginia through the efforts of founding members Judy Boyd and Cora Sue Spruill who had participated in garden club activities with the Garden Club of the Northern Neck and saw a need for a similar club on the Middle Peninsula.
Early in 1993, they invited two women from each of the three counties adjacent to Essex county (King and Queen, King William, and Middlesex) to continue plans for the club. These eight founding members met on February 23, 1994:
The group invited Helen Murphy, then President of the Garden Club of Virginia and a founding member of the Garden Club of the Northern Neck, who gave valuable advice about garden clubs. Sara Ann Lindsey, a member of the Hunting Creek Garden Club in Alexandria, had a home in Essex county and became an advisor to the club.
Forty one Active and eleven Associate members were invited to become Charter members of the Garden Club of the Middle Peninsula. On June 16, 1994 they met and elected officers.
On May 15, 1997 the Garden Club of the Middle Peninsula became the 47th member club of the Garden Club of Virginia.
